Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery · Hyderabad
Weight-loss surgery, done by a team that has been doing it since 2008.
We perform laparoscopic bariatric and metabolic procedures at Kirloskar Hospital, Bashir Bagh and Arete Hospital, Gachibowli — with the nutrition support and long-term follow-up that decide whether the weight stays off.
What we do
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are treated differently in every patient. The first appointment is an assessment, not a sales pitch — several people who walk in for surgery leave with a medical and nutrition plan instead.
Bariatric surgery
Sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, MGB-OAGB, gastric plication and banding — all performed laparoscopically, through keyhole incisions.
Metabolic surgery for type 2 diabetes
Ileal interposition, bipartition and related procedures, aimed at diabetes and metabolic disease rather than at weight alone.
Endoscopic options
The intragastric balloon — placed and removed through the mouth, with no incisions and no permanent change to the anatomy.
Non-surgical weight loss
Structured diet, exercise programming and medical therapy, for people who are not surgical candidates or would rather not be.

Common questions
Am I eligible for bariatric surgery?
In India, surgery is generally considered at a BMI of 37.5 and above, or 32.5 and above when obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or severe joint disease are present. These thresholds are lower than the Western ones because of how body fat distributes in South Asian populations. They are guidelines; an assessment decides.
How long is the recovery?
Most procedures involve two to three nights in hospital, three to four for the more complex metabolic operations. Desk work is usually possible within two weeks after a sleeve, band or plication, and three to four weeks after a bypass or metabolic procedure. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise wait around six weeks.
Will I need a special diet afterwards?
Yes. There is a staged progression from liquids to soft food to solids over roughly six weeks, and a permanent change in how much protein you need and how you eat it. Our nutritionist works with you throughout.
Does surgery cure type 2 diabetes?
It can put it into remission, which is not the same as a cure. Results depend on how long you have had diabetes, how much insulin your pancreas still produces, and what you do afterwards. We assess this before recommending anything.
Is it covered by insurance?
Usually, subject to your policy's conditions and waiting periods, and pre-authorisation has to be obtained before admission. Note that insurers often set a higher BMI threshold than the clinical criteria used to select patients for surgery. Avinash, our co-ordinator, handles this with you.
We are rebuilding this site. The old one went offline, and rather than patch it we have rebuilt it from scratch. The detailed procedure pages, the patient information and the articles are being checked by one of our surgeons before they go back up, and will return over the coming days.
Nothing about the practice has changed. Both clinics are running normally — call reception on 040 2323 0633, message us on WhatsApp, or send an email.
