About Ugale Bariatrics — Weight Loss Centre in Hyderabad
A bariatric and metabolic surgery practice in Hyderabad, built around laparoscopic technique, nutrition, and follow-up that does not stop at discharge.
Ugale Bariatrics treats obesity and type 2 diabetes surgically and non-surgically. The practice operates out of Kirloskar Hospital, Bashir Bagh and Arete Hospital, Gachibowli, and every procedure we offer is performed through minimally invasive laparoscopic or endoscopic technique.
What we actually treat
Obesity is not one condition, and it does not have one answer. Some patients who come to us for surgery are better served by a medical and nutritional programme. Some who come asking about diet pills have a BMI and a set of comorbidities that make surgery the more honest recommendation. The first consultation exists to work out which of those you are.
The three broad routes we work with:
- Bariatric surgery — sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, MGB-OAGB, gastric plication and gastric banding, aimed primarily at sustained weight loss.
- Metabolic surgery — ileal interposition and related procedures, aimed at type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease, where weight loss is a consequence rather than the goal.
- Non-surgical management — structured diet, exercise and medical therapy, used on its own or as preparation for surgery.
Where the team's work sits
In 2008, the team led by Dr. Surendra Ugale became the second in the world, and the first in India, to perform laparoscopic ileal interposition for type 2 diabetes. In 2013 the team co-developed the Diabetes Severity & Remission Score, a tool for predicting which patients are likely to achieve remission after metabolic surgery — which matters, because promising remission to someone unlikely to achieve it is how patients end up disappointed by an operation that worked exactly as it should have.
How we work
Assessment before recommendation. A full workup — bloods, endoscopy where indicated, anaesthetic assessment, and a conversation about what you eat and why — precedes any surgical plan.
Laparoscopic by default. Small incisions, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, faster return to work.
Nutrition is not an afterthought. Our nutritionist is involved before surgery and stays involved afterwards. The operation restricts how much you can eat; it does not decide what you eat.
Follow-up is part of the treatment. Some weight regain after bariatric surgery is common, and patients who stay in contact with the team tend to hold their results better.
